Project Hosts SQL Connectivity Options

This memo outlines options for connecting the SQL database of a Project Hosts’ hosted EPM solution to other applications or databases that are located at the customer site or at another hosting location.

Project Hosts offers five options to connect to a Project Server SQL database:

· Project Data Service (PDS): Standard hosted EPM deployments allow connectivity to SQL using PDS. In fact, this is how Project Web Access (PWA) connects to the Project Server SQL database. If a customer’s local application or database is able to make PDS calls, then this is the simplest and best option.

· SQL through https: Hosted EPM deployments can also be configured to support SQL access through https. If a customer’s local application cannot make PDS calls but can make SQL through https calls, this is the next best option.

· SQL Reporting Services: If a customer has a dedicated SQL Server, Project Hosts can deploy SQL Reporting Services on it. Using SQL Reporting Services, a customer can define reports that can be made from direct SQL calls. Note that Project Hosts service includes installing SQL Reporting Services and providing access to it – the service does not include report definition and configuration.

· Windows VPN: In a hosted EPM deployment involving a dedicated SQL server, it is possible to establish a Windows-to-Windows VPN from a server in another location and make direct SQL calls.

· Hardware VPN: This option requires hardware VPN devices to be deployed both in the Project Hosts data center and also in the customer location.
