The future of information technology is the cloud. Amazon and Microsoft are two companies that provide cloud services. A cloud service provider (CSP) is a company that offers cloud managed services to businesses and/or individuals.
While Azure is eight years behind Amazon Web Services (AWS), it is of Microsoft – “arguably the most mature technology company in the world.” AWS might be more mature than Azure in cloud computing, but Azure offers several features that AWS has not yet adopted. One of the biggest areas that Azure outperforms AWS is security. Microsoft’s role-based access control (RBAC), known as Active Directory, far exceeds AWS’ RBAC. With 82% of American IT decision makers making security their top priority on a cloud-based service, security cannot be ignored. Azure also has over 70 compliance offerings making it the largest compliance offering in the industry. Project Hosts utilizes Microsoft’s Active Directory and Infrastructure level compliances to offer migration and security and compliance services on Microsoft Azure. There are twelve different areas where Azure has more offerings than AWS, including storage, game development, visual studio, and others.
In a video published by Microsoft from a series on Azure Sales Fundamentals, they believe that 60% of computing will be done in the public cloud by 2025. They reference surveys that believe Microsoft will be the largest IaaS vendor and that they were the best hybrid cloud provider. Azure offers free Azure cost management, they support open source, and have physical and environmental security.
Overall, both cloud services have their benefits and drawbacks. However, more people use and are familiar with Microsoft products, making the on-boarding process of Azure easier to understand. It is no surprise the 90% of Fortune 500 companies trust their business on the Microsoft Cloud.
